STATE OF OHIO Executive Department Office of the Governor Columbus RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the demand for Information Technology (IT) workers continues to increase, with job growth in this career field comprising 30 percent of the fastest growing occupations nationally and 40 percent in Ohio; and WHEREAS, the gender balance of IT workers is unequal with women accounting for only one in five college graduates with majors in computer science and engineering and a trend of fewer women in IT occupations over the past 20 years; and WHEREAS, the Ohio Department of Education, Office of Career-Technical and Adult Education, works to equalize opportunities for men and women in all careers, including IT; and WHEREAS, the Department, in conjunction with the Ohio IT Business Advisory Network, is partnering with 10 colleges and universities to encourage grade 7-10 girls in Ohio schools to consider careers in IT; and WHEREAS, the partnership launched We Are IT, a campaign focused on reaching more than 1,000 Ohio girls; and WHEREAS, the focal point of the campaign is a We Are IT day of information, activities and events on the campuses of Edison Community College (Piqua), University of Akron, University of Cincinnati (Batavia), Columbus State Community College, Hocking College (Nelsonville), Lakeland College (Kirtland), North Central State College (Mansfield), Owens Community College (Toledo), Sinclair Community College (Dayton) and Youngstown State University; and WHEREAS, the itWORKS Ohio information technology initiative and Ohio’s Third Frontier Project has the leadership to expand Ohio's high-tech research capabilities and promote innovation and company formation that will create high-paying jobs for generations to come. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BOB TAFT, Governor of the State of Ohio, do hereby recognize November 17, 2006 as WE ARE IT DAY throughout the State of Ohio to highlight the need for more women in IT-related occupations.
